[[File:Usage-2DView_de.png|right|thumb|200px|2D-Ansicht]]

Both, the classic Scrabble as well as Superscrabble are played on the two-dimensional board. But even the spatial game in 3D mode make use of the 2D view to place tiles.

[[File:Usage-2DView_en.png|right|thumb|200px|2D view]]

Tiles are moved per [[wikipedia:en:Drag_and_Drop|drag 'n drop]] from the rack to the 2D view, and shown there as newly placed tiles after dropping. Unless the move has not been finished the placed letters can be moved in the same way back, or to another position. You can as well right click a tile to send it immediately back to the rack. When tiles are moved to an illegal position the cursor is changed to a nodrop symbol, and dropping wouldn't be accepted.

[[File:Usage-2DViewKeyboard_en.png|right|thumb|200px|Keyboard usage: I and 9 have been pressed]]

As of release 3.1.4 you may also place tiles per keyboard. To do so you have to type the letter and the number of the starting coordinate, for instance H and 8 - or 8 and H, the sequence doesn't matter. The horizontal and vertical squares starting from H8 will be highlighted. You can change the start point by pressing any letter or number - the start coordinate will be updated accordingly. When ready press one of the cursor keys, i.e. up, down, left or right. Thereafter you cannot change the position anymore, except you cancel with escape and restart. To actually place tiles just type the word you want to place. Every character will be assumed as one square. If, for instance, NA is being placed at H9 and you start at H8 typing SNAFU the NA will be used (even when you type SSSFU). In case a tile is not present on the rack the joker will be used, if possible. Otherwise nothing is placed and the position is not advanced.

Rows and columns are labeled with letters and numbers (at the [[Rules:Variants|3D mode]] additionally with greek letters or roman numbers). The size is adjusted automatically. Field colors, letter font, the indication of the last move, least move's color etc. - all can be adjusted as you want via [[Configuration:DesignColor|configuration]]. And you can modify the look and feel of the board by designing an [[Configuration:CreateDesign|own design]] or loading one of the predefined.

The [[Configuration:Dictionary|dictionary]] may include a meaning for every word, for instance the description or a translation. This meaning can be shown as tooltip, that shows up when you hover with the mouse over a placed word. Intersections of two (or more) words retrieve the information for all items. To avoid cheating the tooltip is deactivated for words unless the move is finished, and in case of [[Configuration:WordCheckMode|challenge mode]]. If you play [[Rules:Variants|CLABBERS]], the real words to the placed anagram are added to the tooltip.

In case of three-dimensional games you can change the active layer per clicking on a coordinate. Assuming, for example, the active dimension is xy and you have y=A..O on the vertical axis and x=1..15 on the horizontal with an active layer of z=VIII. When you click on the coordinate A the dimension changes to xz with active layer on A. And you can iterate through dimensions per click on the top left most field. All functions concerning the 3D mode are available in the respective [[Usage:3D-View|view]] as well.

=== Cambio Secco ===

=== Null-Punkte-Züge als Passen werten ===

=== Restbuchstaben abziehen/hinzufügen ===

== Numerische Werte ==

=== Bonus bei Spielende ===

=== Min. #Buchstaben für Austausch ===

=== Bonus für Scrabbles ===

=== Spielerreihenfolge ===

__NOTOC__

[[File:Config-ExtendedRules_en.png|right|thumb|300px|Rule options]]

The subitem ''options'' below rules provides some options to adopt the game for regional standards as well as some newly introduced features.

== Simple check boxes ==
=== Joker exchange ===
As a new feature, Scrabble3D introduces the option to exchange previously placed jokers with the equivalent letter. Just move the tile onto the placed joker and drop it if this option is set and the letters are the same (the drag symbol shows whether or not dropping is possible). When you exchange a joker nothing else is allowed thereafter - no change of tile, no placement of letters.

=== Jokerization (What-if-only variant) ===
With ''Jokerization'' also known as what-if-only variant allows the exchange of a tile at the rack into a joker. However the move is treated as valid subsequently only when the move scores with at least points as defined at the bonus for a Scrabble/Bingo (usually 50 points). The functions is available in every move for one tile on the rack. The joker is not drawn from the bag so you will probably end with more jokers on the board than originally defined.

=== Cambio Secco ===
''Cambio Secco'' is a well known extension at the Italian rules. Once in a game you can exchange all tiles on the rack without losing the right to move.

=== Treat zero moves as pass ===
With the option ''Treat zero moves as pass'' the effect of moves with zero points to the game end is controlled. If the option is checked the change of tiles or invalid moves are counted as well as a pass.

=== Subtract/Add left tile's value ===
These two options control the final evaluation. The score of all not placed tiles will be deducted from the player's result, if the option is set. The sum of all deducted values is added to the result of the player who ended the game. Therefore, the option to add left tile's value is available only if subtraction is checked.

== Numerical Options ==
=== Penalty for jokers left ===
If someone has jokers not placed after the game end, this could be penalized with extra points for every joker on the rack.

=== Passes until game end ===
Repeated pass lead to game end. With this option you control how often every player can pass (or do a zero point move in respect to setting above). The default setting if 2 for English means that every player can have 2 passes so in total 4 times no tile is placed. You get informed about the remaining moves in the [[Usage:Messages|messages]]. If one of the player makes a valid move the number of passes is set to zero.

=== Bonus on game end ===
A player who ends the game with a Scrabble may receive an extra bonus for this feat. The value 0 means no bonus is given, which is the default.

=== Limit exchange to #tiles ===
Some regional rules restrict the change of tiles at the rack to a certain number of tiles left in the bag. For instance, the Spanish rules require more than 1 tile left, the Italian rule 3, and in French it is the number of tiles on the rack (that is 7). The English default 0 means that you can exchange as long as the bag is not empty.

=== Bonus für Scrabbles/Bingos ===
With this option you can change the bonus when all tiles are placed at once from the known 50 points to any other value. Consider to play with this option in combination with the jokerization.

=== Player sequence ===
This option replicates the setting from the [[Usage:NewGame|new game]] dialog. It is the only way to switch the sequence when in network mode, but available only if all players in the group run at least release 3.1.4.

The dialog to start a new game is opened per click on the respective button on the [[Usage:Toolbar|toolbar]], at the [[Usage:Main_Menu|main menu]], or via ctrl+G.

At the left area you can choose how many players participate in the game. With this selection the input fields get activated which offers a preset of user names (1st player, 2nd player etc.), completed by the previously entered names. For example you can change the default '1st player' to 'Scotty'. This name will be available later for fast selection in the drop-down control. The name 'Computer' is reserved for the PC as opponent (see [[Usage:Computer|computer as player]]).

The check box 'Auto pause in local games' pauses the game after every move until the current player intentionally restarts. This function is useful to hide opponent's tiles which would be shown otherwise after clicking 'next player'.

The option ''sequence'' allows to choose between randomized or alternating order. Randomized means the sequence of players is decided by chance for every game resulting in the unwanted effect that one player starts the game again and again. Alternating, however, uses the sequence as defined in the dialog but moves the last player to the beginning so the sequence is balanced. In network mode this setting is only available when all player in the group are using at least version 3.1.4 (otherwise the legacy mode is randomized). To modify the option then it is necessary to change it in the [[Configuration:ExtendedRules|configuration]].

In network mode all inputs on the left part of the dialog are disabled. The fields contain the [[Usage:Network|aliases]] of active group members (kibitzes are not active).

The right section offers a fast selection to all [[Configuration:Presets|presets]], i.e. predefined configurations. If you select another set the appropriate settings are loaded directly. The table below shows a roundup for the most important settings of the active configuration. This includes the dictionary and the chosen categories, the board, number of tiles, jokers, random letters and so on.

During network mode the right sections shows the configuration that has been transmitted by the player who started the game. And the dropdown control is disabled in this case.

[[File:Usage-2DView_de.png|right|thumb|200px|2D-Ansicht]]

Unless the move has not been finished the placed letters can be moved in the same way back, or to another position. You can as well right click a tile to send it immediately back to the rack. When tiles are moved to an illegal position the cursor is changed to a nodrop symbol, and dropping wouldn't be accepted.

[[File:NSA_Rating-en.png|right|300px|NSA Rating depending on difference and number of games]]

Several methods are known to estimate the own performance compared to other players. Well known in chess is the [[wikipedia:Elo_rating|Elo rating]]. Scrabble (as well as Scrabble3D) uses the similar [http://www.scrabbleassociation.com/ratings/how.html NSA rating] by the [http://www2.scrabble-assoc.com National Scrabble Association]. There might be as well regional differences, for instance in Germany.

All methods have in common that the rating will be adopted in respect to the difference between the own rating and the opponent's rating. The probability for a win (or a loss) is multiplied by a factor depending on the absolute rating and the number of games.

With the first registration all players start with a rating of 1000. A game against a player with an equal rating results in plus (or minus) 15 points. If more than one player have taken part in the game the total number is divided by the number of players minus one. That makes for three players 7.5 and for four players 5 points. Every single matching will be calculated and summed up. That makes 3*5 points for the best player, 2*5 minus 5 for the second best, 1*5 minus 2*5 (respectively -5) points for the third player, and minus 3*5 for the player with the least score (the actual value depend on the rating difference). The rating will be stored on the game server and shown in the [[Usage:Statistics|highscore list]].
The server program itself is available at [https://sourceforge.net/projects/scrabble/files/Server/ Sourceforge], either for ARM CPUs (eg. The program utilizes port 5001; make sure the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_forwarding port forwarding] is configured appropriately.
Use the following sql statement to create the table "Users" with all required fields (NULL is required!):

CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `Users` (
In case of an exeption after the first start it might help to create one entry:
INSERT INTO `Users`(`Name`, `Passwd`, `Key`, `GamesPlayed`, `Rating`, `Registered`,
`LastConnect`,`LastIP`, `LastMac`, `Messages`, `AllowKibitz`, `Email`)
(Edit: Empty table should work well with the latest version).

The server program is not a daemon, which means you must not close the shell where you started it. Use a terminal multiplexer like [http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Screen GNU Screen] to logout, nonetheless.

You can pass the following parameters with the program start:

ScrabbleServer v0.2
Parameters:
Those that are not specified as parameter have to be entered later. That makes sense for at least the password for security reason.
Errors are saved in /var/log/Scrabble3D, but most serial output goes to the shell.

[[File:Network-Kibitz_en.png|thumb|200px|right|Kibitze in a group]]
A 'kibitz' is a silent observer of games, known in board or card games. Scrabble3D has this features too: depending on user settings a game can be kibitzed. You can switch to ''private'' mode by clicking the appropriate button at the [[Usage:Toolbar|toolbar]]. Currently connected kibitzes would be kicked out of the group and wouldn't be able to join again. The same button can be used to switch back to open mode. The last setting is stored on the server.

To observe an open game select the game at the tab [[Usage:GameServer|game server]] and chose from the context menu 'kibitz'. Alternatively you might get also invited by one of the player (in this case whether or not the game is public or private). In any case your status will be checked by the server and you become a normal player if you have been part of the game previously. Kibitzes are indicated by an user icon with glasses.

Messages within groups are delivered to kibitzes as well. But it is possible to [[Network:Chat|chat]] solely with other kibitzes per ''tattle'' command respectively the appropriate selection from the receivers list. Kibitzes do not have the right to vote, that means they are not asked whether or not a word is valid or the like. If a new game is started the kibitz remains it's status and will not become a normal player. If you want to be part of the new game you should regroup. But keep in mind that groups are limited to four players.

To end the observation select yourself at the tab game server and chose ''Leave group'' from the context menu. If all real players disconnect or leave the group you will be kicked out automatically; a kibitz cannot be an exclusive member of a group.

In contrast to the [[Network:Synchronous_Game|normal, synchronous game]] mates in asynchronous games are not simultaneously online - or rather not grouped. This can either be caused unintentionally by a network error or deliberately to run time shifted games. Every move is stored on the server and the game can be reloaded later thereby. It makes sense to deactivate the time limit in asynchronous games to allow every player sufficient time to play a move.

[[File:Network-RemoteGames_en.png|thumb|200px|right|Stored network games]]
All players must be connected in a group to start an asynchronous game. Once everyone has agreed to the start the new game, you will be able to reload the game after leaving the group and even when you log out from the server. To load such a game just click at the [[Usage:Main_Menu| main menu]] 'File' > 'Load remote game...'. This opens a dialog window in which all stored games are listed including when the game was started, when the last move was done, the list of players, and the total number of moves. In cases it is your turn the item is indicated by a green arrow. Finished games have a red symbol; all other games have no special marker. It should be noted that in a finished match the green arrow not (yet) necessarily appears (it's not your turn but the game was ended by another player), but you need to reload it in any case to perform the game end calculation.
Games that are not touched for a certain period are removed from the list (that is after 14 days on the Free International Scrabble Server).

To load a game select the item and click 'Load'. If you are grouped with other players all have to confirm the operation. Those that are previously involved in this game will continue it as normal player like in a synchronous game. Players who have not participated in this game become a [[Network:Kibitz|kibitz]], that means they will just observe the game.

Asynchronous games are unique in that no other players will confirm questions such as if the game can be paused or even to reject unknown words. Fair play is up to you. After clicking on [[Usage:NextPlayer|next player]] you may leave the group or logout from the server - and wait for the moves of your mates. If you have entered your email address in the [[Usage:Network|network dialog]] the server will send you an email when it's your turn.

If you are not able to make a move anymore, for example when you run out of time, you should still reload the game in order to (automatically) click on 'Next player'. Otherwise the game would be stalled. If you load a game that has been ended yet you will receive the final calculation including the new rating. Those games remains available for a couple of days (currently 14 days). It is possible to save a local copy of the game, you can perform a post-hoc [[Usage:Computer|game analysis]], and you can show it to friends by inviting them as a kibitz.

[[File:Network-Invitation.png|right|thumb|Invitation dialog]]

Basically, any number of players can be online at the game server. Games are run in ''groups'', that has to get established first. Go to the tab [[Usage:GameServer|game server]] and select your mates (left click at the name). Per right click a context menu pops up where you can chose 'Invite'. If the player agrees he or she will join your group. Since game and server are aimed for international audience the invitation is accomplished with the information about the loaded dictionary, the menu language, and the country stated at the login. Repeat that for up to four players (additional will be treated as [[Network:Kibitz|kibitzes]]). You can only invite people that are ''open for games''.

Grouped players are shown respectively in the game server tab. After the game has been started the header of your group contains the time when the game was started and the number of moves so far. You don't need to reconnect to leave the group. Just select yourself (left click) in the game server tab, and choose 'Leave group' from the context menu (opened by right click). If you get invited by another player you will leave the current group automatically.

When one of the grouped player starts a [[Usage:NewGame|new game]] his or her [[Usage:Configuration|settings]] like rules and board etc. are transmitted to the group and is shown in the dialog that opens automatically. The game starts not until all mates agree with these settings. You can examine the configuration during the game, the [[Configuration:Presets|preset]] will be called 'Network settings by...'. Of course, changes do not influence the running game.

After calling the [[Usage:NextPlayer|next player]] the compliance with rules is checked first. Then a silent check follows whether or not the newly placed and connected words are known in all dictionaries. Depending on the [[Configuration:WordCheckMode|word check mode]] you have the opportunity to correct mistakes or you the open poll starts immediately. That means mates are asked if the word should be treated as valid. If only one player refuses the move is treated as invalid. In challenge mode this procedure is started when one of the mates objects the word(s).

Every move is stored on the game server. Thereby it is possible to play [[Network:Asynchronous_Game|asynchronous]] which means you can make your move independently from your mates or re-join a running game after disconnection, for instance. Just join the group like a [[Network:Kibitz|kibitz]] - you will be acknowledged as real player automatically. To do so select your game resp. group (not a player) at the game server tab and chose ''Kibitz'' from the context menu. This option is only available for [[Usage:Toolbar|public games]]. If your game is running in private mode you have to get an invitation of one of the grouped players to re-join. If all mates are reunified the game runs normal and synchronous again.

[[File:Network-Poll.png|thumb|right|Poll]]

All aspects that concern the game play are decided democratically. For example, if you want to [[Usage:Toolbar|pause]] a running game a poll is initiated first. Only when all mates confirm it will be executed. The result of polls is shown a special dialog for the initiator, and per icon in the [[Usage:Statusbar|status bar]] for all others.

During the game both the right section of the [[Usage:WordSearch|word search]] dialog is deactivated, and additionally the left part as well in case of the [[Configuration:WordCheckMode|challenge mode]] to avoid [[wikipedia:Cheating|cheating]]. As long as the game has not been ended you cannot search for words, you cannot save the game, and the calculation of the [[Usage:Computer|best move]] by the computer is not possible. All options are available after the game end, including the game analysis. Regarding the latter function: evaluation results are transmitted to all mates (and stored at the server), so only one player needs to run the post-hoc analysis.

If a player cannot make a move anymore, for example when the [[Configuration:TimeLimit|time limit]] has been reached, he or she should still stay in the group. Otherwise the automatic click on 'next player' is not done since the player is offline and the game would be stalled.

On game end the final scoring is done including the individual [[Network:Rating|rating]]. Depending on the server settings the game is stored for a while. You can reload and review it, or show it to your friends (see as well [[Network:Asynchronous_Game|asynchronous games]]) .

Words can be assigned to [[Configuration:Categories|categories]], whose names are listed in the section <code>[Categories]</code>. Up to 255 categories can be used. The assignment of words to a particular category is done by the number.
The section <code>[Words]</code> contains all words. Letters are capitalized on reading. Every line corresponds to a word. Dictionary that contains of [[wikipedia:Digraph_(orthography)|digraphs]] or [[wikipedia:Trigraph_(orthography)|trigraphs]] needs special treatment. For a proper use of those multi characters letters you have to configure the [[Configuration:Rules|letter set]] accordingly.

For example, the Spanish Scrabble rules show the digraphs CH, LL, and RR as single character on one tile. Since it's not possible to enter the character directly, the dictionary replaces them by 1, 2, and 3. That means entries in the section <code>[Words]</code> like LLAMAR or CHAMPURRA are represented as 2AMAR and 1AMPU3A respectively. And to show digraphs instead of the number the dictionary adds a section <code>[Replace]</code> with the content 1=CH 2=LL 3=RR. In this case, the letter set uses 1..3 for letters.

You can use any character for replacement.
In case of a dictionary that does not have an inbuilt [[Configuration:Letters|letter set]] or if you define a very specific dictionary like math, it could be useful to add the appropriate standard letter set to the dictionary.
<BR>
<BR>

[[File:config_cmp_francais.jpg|right|thumb|300px|Ordinateur]]
